California Roots is a music festival for everyone. The event began in 2010 as a one-day fest with a handful of artists, and it has since grown to 4 days (new for 2023) and a more extensive lineup. Cali Roots returns for its 12th installment on May 25-28 in Monterey, CA, at the Monterey County Fairgrounds, about 115 miles southeast of San Francisco.
The festival incorporates various genres like reggae rock, island reggae, roots reggae, folk, and conscious hip hop. The 2023 headliners are Rebelution, Wu-Tang Clan, Stick Figure, and Dirty Heads. Support is massive on this lineup with artists and bands like Michael Franti & Spearhead, Atmosphere, SOJA, Thievery Corporation, Sublime With Rome, Cypress Hill, Steel Pulse, Shaggy, Collie Buddz, Iration, Dispatch, Kolohe Kai, Matisyahu, among others. In addition to the music, Cali Roots features yoga, muralists, interactive artists, and more.
Since day one, Cali Roots has committed itself to the environment and social movements. They incorporate sustainability onsite and into their core daily business operations to reduce the festival’s environmental impact. In 2020, Cali Roots became the first certified green event in California.
